A header tank in a boiler system is used to store and supply cold water to the central heating system, while also accommodating the expansion of water as it heats up, essentially acting as a pressure regulator to maintain the correct water level within the system and prevent damage from excessive pressure.
It provides a reservoir for cold water to feed the heating system and absorbs the extra volume when water expands due to heat.
Header tanks are primarily used in open vented central heating systems where water can freely expand and contract.
Typically placed in the loft or at the highest point in the building to ensure proper water flow
